Ramblings

I have a few random ramblings tonight...I promise to post something better later.

"Is this normal?" This is something I hear from Kev frequently...in reference to our little girl's explosive bowels. That's right...we still battle blowout diapers, like 3 out of every 4 poopy diapers. We have tried every brand of diapers we can think of and finally settled on 7th Generation because they seemed to work semi-okay. She's wearing size 3s which should fit (she's still in the weight range). We change her diapers frequently, but all of our efforts are to no avail.

For those who do not have kids, blowout diapers are really a pain, as I'm sure you can imagine. Of course they most frequently at the most inopportune time, like as we're walking out the door. Last Saturday, she had a huge blowout in her car seat on the way back from Ft. Worth (Kev's sister's wedding). It was a pretty fun task to change her diaper in the back seat when poop is everywhere. Then on Sunday, she had a blowout diaper while we were shopping (got all over Kev's shirt).

I have two saving graces. First, even when there is poop everywhere, seeing her smile at me with her cute face makes it all okay. Second, Kev has officially become our poop stain expert, and I'm very thankful he takes the time to scrub her clothes and immediately throw them in the laundry. So for all you moms out there, any suggestions? I feel like if it just happened occasionally I wouldn't mind, but it feels like it happens constantly.

My other rambling thought I have is I realized this past weekend I have a love/hate relationship for Miss Elliott's schedule. Yes, I love the fact that she goes to sleep promptly when we lay her down for her naps and she sleeps great at night, but I hate the fact that she will rarely sleep anywhere other than her crib (like even in our arms). This is especially inconvenient when we're out of pocket (like at the wedding this past weekend). Kev officiated (he did an awesome job) and I was a bridesmaid. His aunts graciously agreed to hold her during the ceremony then she cried off and on throughout the whole thing. Lovely. The wedding felt like an eternity. Poor girl was tired, but of course was desperately fighting sleep since she wasn't in a quite, dark place. I'm not sure what to do to remedy this at this point in her life. Thoughts?

  1. Erica - I feel your pain. We had the same issues with blow-out diapers. In the car seat is the worst. Explosive runny poop - we've had it up the back of the diaper, the front, and from the legs, not to mention all at the same time! :) Anyway, we tried every brand of diapers, and finally found Nature Babycare - and we are so thankful, our blowout ratio is now more like one out of every 10 or 15. Have you tried them? It's something about the stuff they're made of, it absorbs the runny poo instead of it just sitting on top of the diaper material. We love them. Bonus that we don't have to feel guilty about her diapers being in a landfill for hundreds of years, lol. Also, I order them in bulk from Amazon for 30% off and free 2 day shipping (with free membership to Amazon Mom and a diaper subscription). I know everyone says cloth diapers are best, & maybe I'll have time to try that with the next baby, but for now I feel like at least I've found 2nd best. Hope you find a good solution. Love, Kate

  2. Hi, Erica! Blow-outs are awful. We found with our now 7-year-old Josh, that even though he was within the weight range listed on the package, if he was witin about 4 pounds of the top range, that was when we needed to switch. Once we figured that out, and moved him up to the next size, the blowouts stopped. Good luck!

  4. Erica, We would sometimes go to the next size up with Pearce and things were less 'explosive'. Having said that, I also noticed that Pearce's blowouts got better when he went from solely breastmilk, to some solids as well. For some reason the liquidity of the blowouts was lessened. Hope this helps...and as far as stains? Let's just say we still have some yellowish onesies so I would love to hear Kevin's tricks.

  6. Paisley rarely has blowouts so the Pampers still work for us. Sorry I don't have any advice in that area.

Sleep has become a little different for us too. She now loves her crib and prefers it to anything else. Which is a huge problem since we have her at Aaron's clinic 4 days a week. Plus, she doesn't like to nap if ANYTHING is going on because she might miss out. :(

  7. About the poop, I'm assuming you're still nursing. That just comes with the territory. When you start introducing solids, those "blowouts" will dissipate. Also, you might try buying plain, white onesies and putting them on before her outfit so you can yank that off and, voila, you haven't ruined her perfect outfit, and maybe daddy's too.

Yeah, the sleeping is just first child syndrome from what I hear. That's how Haisley was too. Maybe a second baby will be able to sleep anywhere. (:
